Piri Reis University, established as Turkey's first maritime university in 2008 by the Turkish Maritime Education Foundation, is named after the famed cartographer and author of the Book of Navigation, Piri Reis. The university began accepting students from the 2011-2012 academic year and is distinguished as Turkey's first and only specialized maritime university.

The cistern built during the Byzantine period was an area where Emperors resided and local people used as water reservoirs. Its real name is Basilica Cistern.  It is a historic building with traces of eastern Rome.
