Erciyes University, established in 1977, has its roots in the Gevher Nesibe School of Medicine, which was founded in 1968 as an affiliate of Hacettepe University. Following the establishment of the university, faculties such as Economics and Administrative Sciences, Theology, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences were opened, building upon the existing Faculty of Medicine. Erciyes University has integrated itself with the surrounding community by providing education, research, and health services. A significant portion of the university's infrastructure and service buildings were constructed and fully equipped by philanthropic businesspeople from the region before being donated to the university. This approach has created a novel model for Turkey. In recent years, Erciyes University has made significant strides towards becoming a center of excellence, marked by substantial developments. These advancements have fostered a sense of trust and hope in the community, leading to the perception of Erciyes University as "Our University."

Erciyes University began as the Gevher Nesibe Medical Faculty, which was opened as an affiliation with Hacettepe University in 1969, and Kayseri Business Administration Faculty, which opened in 1977, constituted an independent university under the name of The University of Kayseri in 1978. In 1982, the other two higher education institutions in Kayseri were incorporated into the same university as Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Theology. Then its name was converted to Erciyes University.

Kayseri is located in the Central Red River section where the southern part of Central Anatolia and Taurus Mountains approach each other. East and northeast of the city is surrounded by Sivas, north by Yozgat, west by Nevşehir, southwest by Niğde, south by Adana and Kahramanmaraş provinces.

Ağırnas Underground Cities
As in Nevşehir city, which is known most for its underground formations, there are lots of residents, underground cities and churches within the rocks excavated in the city of Kayseri. Ağırnas Underground Cities located in the Lower Pınar area have a history dating back to the years B.C.
