Located in Diyarbakır, one of the world's oldest settlements and known as the "city of saints and kings," Dicle University is the center of science and research for the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. The university takes its name from the Tigris River (Dicle in Turkish), upon whose fertile banks it is established. Dicle University's early history is linked with Diyarbakır Eğitim Enstitüsü which was chartered on 1962.The Faculty of Medicine, which was opened in 1966 as a part of Ankara University, forms the nucleus of the present Dicle University. With the opening of the Faculty of Art and Sciences in 1974, Dicle University was officially founded including two faculties. The Faculty of Dentistry was founded in 1976 and the Faculty of Agriculture in 1981. The name Diyarbakir University was changed to Dicle University in 1982. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, The Faculty of Law, The Faculty of Education, three graduate schools and five schools were opened as new institutions of the University.

Virgin Mary Church
Church of Virgin Mary in Lalebey district is located within Sur. This church, which dates back to the 3rd century and belongs to the Orthodox Assyrians, is now active. It is noteworthy for its gates and altar from Late Roman Period.
Hasan Pasha Khan
Built between 1572 and 1573 by Vezirzade Hasan Pasha in the Ottoman period, this Khan is located opposite Diyarbakır Ulu Mosque. Evliya Çelebi mentioned this khan in his book.
