Gazi University, originally established as the Orta Muallim ve Terbiye Mektebi by Atatürk in 1926, takes its name from Atatürk's title of "Gazi." Initially, it operated with the aim of meeting the young republic's need for teachers. In 1982, it adopted its current name and has since become a nationally and internationally recognized brand with the motto "Being a part of Gazi is a privilege."

As of 2021, Gazi University hosts approximately 34,000 students.
