Located in Samsun, the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) was established in 1975 and is one of the largest universities in the region. The university's name is in honor of the date May 19, 1919, when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, landed in Samsun to start the War of Independence. The foundations of OMU trace back to the Samsun Medical Faculty of Hacettepe University, founded in 1973, and it officially became an independent entity in 1975. Situated in a region where the Kızılırmak and Yeşilırmak rivers meet the Black Sea, Samsun is known for its natural beauty, and OMU is part of this rich geographical setting, offering a broad infrastructure and various academic opportunities to prepare its students for the future.
The university provides a range of facilities for students and academic staff.
