Located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, a major center of trade and industry, the University bearing the name of Gaziantep province began its educational activities in 1973 with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, initially affiliated with the METU Faculty of Engineering. In 1987, with the addition of various newly established faculties and vocational schools, it gained its legal entity as Gaziantep University.
Gaziantep University supports all kinds of research and development activities at the highest level with its advanced library facilities, modern research laboratories, and information technology infrastructure offered to its students and all academic staff. Social and cultural activities continue to increase at a rapid pace. Student communities significantly contribute to social and cultural activities through various events, and many scientific meetings are organized with the participation of renowned figures concerning economic, political, and international issues relevant to our country.

GAZİANTEP
Gaziantep, formerly known as Antep, is the center town of the same name city located between Southeastern Anatolia Region and Mediterranean Region. The city has the largest population in the southeast. It is the first in terms of industry and development. Gaziantep is divided into two metropolitan towns: Şehit Kamil and Şahinbey. In terms of development, it is the 20th largest city in Turkey. In addition, Gaziantep is the oldest city in Turkey and is still one of the oldest cities in the world. Besides Gaziantep also has an important place in industry and trade of Turkey. The reasons for this include the its location between Anatolia and the Middle East, and its proximity to the port cities. Symbols of Gaziantep include Gaziantep Castle, Baklava and Pistachio.

Gaziantep is a city with narrow streets and old historical houses in almost every corner. Gaziantep houses are single, two or three storey houses with large courtyards, which are separated from outside.
Bedestens (Covered Bazaars)
Bedestens are covered shopping bazaars. Old traditions still continue in historical bazaars. There are many Bedestens in Gaziantep province. Some of these are Kemikli Bedesten, Zincirli Bedesten and Hüseyin Pasha Bedesten.
