Is Turkish Language Proficiency Mandatory for YÖS Application?
Turkish language knowledge is not a requirement among the YÖS (Higher Education Institutions Foreign Student Exam) conditions. In other words, knowing Turkish or documenting your level of Turkish knowledge is not mandatory when applying for or taking the YÖS. Additionally, knowing Turkish is not a mandatory requirement for university admissions.
However, after registering at universities with YÖS exam results, exams to determine the Turkish language levels of students, such as the Exam for Turkish Level Determination for Foreign Students, may be conducted. Following these exams, students are usually classified into groups A, B, or C:
Group A: Students assigned to this group will not encounter a Turkish language barrier during their higher education.
Group B: Students assigned to this group will take a Turkish Course for Foreign Students in addition to their undergraduate courses.
Group C: Students assigned to this group will need to study Turkish Preparatory or obtain a Turkish certificate from TÖMER.
This is important for students to communicate more easily during their education in Turkey and to increase their academic success. Therefore, it may be beneficial for foreign students considering education in Turkey to improve their Turkish language skills.

According to a decision taken in previous years, only 10% of the total foreign student quota has been allocated for Blue Card holder foreign nationals in certain fields such as Dentistry, Medicine, Teaching, and Law Faculties. Quotas for other departments vary depending on the university and faculty and are generally between 5 and 30.
Therefore, foreign national students are advised to follow the official websites of the universities they are interested in for current quota information. Since foreign national student quotas can vary from university to university and faculty to faculty, it is important for students to thoroughly review this information before applying.
